Classic Ski Mountaineering in the High Andes around Mendoza and Aconcagua.
See our Latest Photos page for photos from our 2009 Argentina Ski Explorer. In three weeks of skiing we had 95% blue skies and no rain or storms. Just wine, spring snow and sunshine!
This new ski-mountaineering expedition, which ran for the first time in 2009, travels to one of the countries with the best ski-touring in the Andes. The expedition will be based in the city of Mendoza in western Argentina, from where we will make several trips into the high Andes, including the area around Aconcagua, the highest peak in South America. This trip is particularly suitable for those skiers who are new to ski touring, with little or no previous ski touring or mountaineering experience.
Our first mountain destination will be the small ski resort of Penitentes where we will ski several peaks and have a warm up day on the pistes (if open). After a night back in Mendoza we will drive south to the major resort of Las Leñas, where again we will have several days skiing in the nearby mountains. In the event of poor weather we will perhaps have another resort day here as well. Finally we travel back north to the Atuel valley where we will ski a couple of higher peaks, perhaps getting as high as 4500m on the slopes of Volcan Overo. This area is very near the site of the 1972 plane crash as documented in the film and book "Alive". While here we camp near the roadside, or use a primitive "bothy style" accommodation for this section of the trip.
This itinerary will be deliberately kept flexible to make the best use of weather and snow conditions. The balance of time we spend in the different mountain venues and the choice of tour each day will depend on current snow and weather conditions, and particularly the state of the access roads.
A similar trip but generally with longer and harder days out skiing is our Chile Ski Mountaineer, which we have successfully run for many years,
Expedition members should be strong parallel or telemark skiers (black runs). Previous touring experience is not necessary as this is a very straightforward ski-mountaineering itinerary. We will take our own touring skis and other equipment out to Argentina.
Please read the comments about our style of trip before booking one of our treks or expeditions.
