Mountaineering in southern Peru.
NEW ITINERARY FOR 2011
This mountaineering expedition will attempt Ausangate 6372m, the highest peak in the Cordillera Vilcanota near Cuzco in southern Peru. We'll climb the peak as part of the circuit trek of the Cordillera Vilcanota, which will give us some good acclimatisation and also a chance to make a first acclimatisation ascent of Campa 5470m. The circuit is a relatively hard and wild trek, crossing two passes of nearly 5100m. Plenty of llamas are guaranteed as well as some stunning scenery.
Ausangate is a long but mostly straightforward climb, the key being a 200m, 40-50º headwall at about 5800m, which is sometimes pure snow but is often in mixed condition. Below this difficult section we'll climb moraines to a high camp at about 5400m, then across a glacier basin. Above the headwall there is a long walk over the summit "plateau". Depending on snow conditions you may need to use snowshoes for this upper plateau. On the Alpine scale Ausangate rates as an AD.
Before going to the Cordillera Vilcanota we will have several days sightseeing in and around Cuzco, the ancient capital of the Inca Empire. This will give us a chance to see many of the ruins in the area. This will include a day trip to the lost city of the Incas at Machu Picchu, a fascinating place in the high jungle. Cuzco is at a height of about 3400m, so our time here will give us some good early acclimatisation.
Clients should have some winter climbing experience at grades II to III as a minimum, or equivalent Alpine experience. A good standard of fitness is also required and previous altitude experience is a clear advantage.
For those who wish to do more climbing in Peru our ascent of Ausangate in the Cordillera Vilcanota can be combined with an 8 day extension to climb Huascaran, 6746m, the highest peak in Peru. See our Huascaran Extension page for more details, dates and prices.

The glacier and headwall on Ausangate, in snowy conditions. The high camp is a bit above the photographer, the route skirts the lower glacier on the left, then climbs the headwall more or less in the centre of the picture. The summit is on the right.
